BenOS Genesis

Getting started, versions and the built-in apps.

What happened to BenOS HTML?

It's now called BenOS Genesis. BenOS HTML was the name for version 1.0 only. From version 2.0, BenOS is BenOS Genesis, at the same web address and on the same GitHub page.

How do I start using BenOS Genesis?

Open mybenos.benjaminoriginals.com in any modern browser. There's nothing to install. Then open Settings and set up your account: your name, plus an optional password and hint.

Is BenOS Genesis free?

Yes. It's free to use on the web, and free to download from GitHub.

Can I run BenOS Genesis on my own computer?

Yes. On the GitHub page, click Code, then Download ZIP. Extract the files and open the HTML file in your browser. For your files to save permanently, run it through a local web server such as VS Code Live Server or Python's http.server instead of opening the file directly.

Is the web version different from the download?

No, it's the same OS. The web version updates automatically, and your data is kept when updates go out.

Does BenOS Genesis change my computer's operating system?

No. It runs inside your browser and doesn't interact with or modify macOS, Windows, Linux or anything else on your device. That also means it doesn't replace your computer's own security.

Which apps come with BenOS Genesis?

Fifteen: BenAI, BenStudio, BenMusic, BenBrowser, BenHealth, BenCam, BenWeather, BenPen, Files, Terminal and BenViewer, plus Calculator, Clock, the App Store and Settings. See what each one does.

Which browsers does it work in?

Any modern browser. Keeping your browser up to date gives you the best experience and the latest security fixes.

Can I request a song for BenMusic?

Yes. The BenMusic library keeps growing, and you can ask for new songs to be added. Just email us with the song you'd like.

Safeguards

The layers of protection built into BenOS, and what they do for you.

What safeguards are built into BenOS Genesis?

Several layers. Every app runs in its own sandbox, a crash only ever closes the app that crashed, your files stay in your browser on your own device, BenOS Connect keeps your files safe with you, and Demo Mode locks down anything sensitive when other people use your device. BenAI adds its own safety rules too, like never acting on a guess.

What does it mean that apps are sandboxed?

Every app opens in its own sandboxed frame, kept apart from the rest of the system. That includes apps you build or download. Websites in BenBrowser tabs are sandboxed too, and BenStudio's live preview runs in a sandbox that only lets scripts run.

What happens if an app crashes?

BenOS closes just that app and tells you what went wrong. Apps you build or download also run with a crash bridge that catches their errors, so one broken app can't take down the whole OS.

What is BenOS Connect?

The protection built into BenOS Genesis. It keeps your files safe with you, gives you a secure, private connection, and powers Demo Mode, so visitors can only reach what you want to show.

Are apps from the App Store safe to run?

Apps you get from the App Store run sandboxed, exactly like every other BenOS app, and any errors they hit are caught by BenOS before they can affect anything else.

What if my browser blocks storage?

BenOS keeps working instead of crashing. It prefers IndexedDB, but if your browser blocks it (in some private windows, for example), BenOS falls back to localStorage, then to memory. In that last case, your files may not be kept after you close the tab.

How is BenOS on Scratch protected?

With your passcode, your SDC and the lock icon in the upper-right corner. BenOS 9 brought a major passcode and security update, and BenOS Matrix added more security updates on top. See every release.

Account & security

Passwords, staying safe and reporting problems.

I forgot my password. What can I do?

That's what the password hint in Settings is for, so set one up if you haven't. If you're still locked out, email us and we'll do what we can.

Will Benjamin Originals ever ask for my password?

Never. We will never ask for your passcode or login details by email, direct message or on any other platform. If someone does, it isn't us.

How do I keep my account safe?

Pick a passcode you can remember and don't reuse it anywhere else. Keep your browser and device up to date, and always log out when you use BenOS Genesis on a shared or public computer.

I found a security problem. How do I report it?

Email contact@benjaminoriginals.com with the details. We usually reply within 24 to 72 hours and start on a fix right away. Security updates go to the latest version of BenOS Genesis.

Files & data

Where your files live and how to keep them safe.

Where are my files stored?

In your browser, using IndexedDB and localStorage.

I cleared my browser data and my files are gone. Can I get them back?

Unfortunately not. Clearing your browser's data or cache can permanently delete your BenOS files and settings, and they can't be recovered. Back up anything important.

Will an update erase my files?

No. Your data is kept when updates are pushed to the web version. Just be careful with your browser's cache and storage settings, and back up important files before you change them.

My files aren't saving in the downloaded version. What's wrong?

Opening the HTML file straight from your computer can stop your files from saving permanently. Run it through a local web server, such as VS Code Live Server or Python's http.server, so your files are kept.

BenID

Your account for every BenOS: signing in, devices and your recovery key.

What is BenID?

One account for every BenOS you use. It carries your name, your picture and your BenOS settings, so they follow you to any BenOS you sign in to. Your files never leave your devices.

How do I get a BenID?

Make one in BenOS Genesis, or right here: . You'll be shown a recovery key once, so save it somewhere safe.

I forgot my BenID password. What can I do?

Use your recovery key. Choose , then type your email, the key and a new password. You'll get a new recovery key, and every other device is signed out. There's no email reset, so keep your recovery key safe.

Can BenID see my files or my password?

No. Your files stay on each device. Your password doesn't leave your device either: BenOS and this site turn it into a scrambled code first, and only that code is sent.

How do I sign out of a device I don't use anymore?

Open Your BenID and choose Sign out next to that device, or sign out of every other device at once. Changing your password also signs out every other device.

How do I delete my BenID?

On Your BenID, go to Delete BenID, type your password and confirm. This deletes your BenID and the settings it keeps for BenOS. Your files stay on your devices. A BenID that nobody signs in to for 400 days is deleted automatically.

What does signing in on this site do?

It shows your name and picture around the site, and lets you manage your BenID: your name, your devices and your password. The site can read the settings your BenID keeps for BenOS, to show them to you, but it never changes them.

BenAI

The assistant built into BenOS Genesis: how it works, how we trained it, and how it keeps you safe.

What is BenAI?

The AI assistant built into BenOS Genesis. Ask it anything, or tell it to do things in BenOS, like turning on dark mode or setting a reminder. You can also use the mic to talk to it, or press Ctrl + / to ask from anywhere.

What can BenAI do?

Open apps, switch between dark and light mode, change your wallpaper, take notes, find files, and control music, volume and brightness. It sets timers and reminders, checks the weather, defines words and explains topics. It works through math step by step, from equations to derivatives, and solves chemistry problems like molar mass and balancing equations. It also converts units and currencies, writes emails and messages, summarizes text, makes strong passwords, and is happy to just chat.

How does BenAI understand what I type?

With its own model, BenAI Understand. It's a small text model, about 105 KB, built right into BenOS Genesis. It reads your words, pairs of words and three-letter chunks, so typos and new ways of saying things still work, and picks which of BenAI's 61 skills your message needs. That skill then pulls out the details, like the app, the city or the time, and does the job.

How was BenAI trained?

Carefully, and only on sentences we wrote ourselves. We built about 26,000 practice requests from more than 1,300 hand-written templates, then mixed in politeness, slang and deliberate typos, so BenAI understands people the way they really type. No real chats or personal data were used. Finally, we compressed the model so it fits inside BenOS Genesis.

How do you know BenAI is accurate?

We test it on sentences written by hand, kept separate from the training data. On a final set of 114 sentences that was never used to tune it, BenAI Understand scores 96.5%. Other hand-written checks cover questions about people (23 out of 23), school questions (26 out of 26) and casual chat (45 out of 48 for the model alone).

Where does BenAI's knowledge come from?

From a built-in BenOS guide and more than 250 built-in study topics, covering geography, the human body, psychology, computing, security, logic, money, the arts and more. These all work offline. When you're online, BenAI can also look things up on Wikipedia.

Does BenAI ever go online?

Only for things it can't know offline, and only when you're connected. It uses Wikipedia for knowledge, Open-Meteo for weather, Free Dictionary for definitions and Frankfurter for exchange rates: free public services that need no account. Only the lookup itself is sent, like a topic, a word, a city (or your approximate area for the weather) or two currency codes. Your chat is never sent.

Where are my chats saved?

In BenOS, on your device, under your own user account, just like the rest of your files.

Are my chats used to train BenAI?

No. Your chats stay on your device and never reach us. BenAI was trained only on practice sentences we wrote ourselves.

What's the difference between Lite, Essential, Pro and Ultra?

Lite gives the quickest, shortest answers and has no daily limit. Essential balances speed and thinking (150 messages a day). Pro thinks harder and breaks multi-part requests into steps (50 a day). Ultra thinks the most, checks its answer against your question before replying, and shows you its thought process (15 a day). Limits refill every night at midnight.

What is the Open Chat add-on?

An optional extra for open-ended questions and creative writing. It's a small open-source model from the Qwen or Llama family, made by other companies, that you download once from Hugging Face. It comes in three sizes: Small (about 0.5 GB), Medium (about 1.5 GB) and Large (about 2.5 GB). It runs on your own device's graphics chip. When it's on, Pro and Ultra hand it open-ended questions, and everything else stays with BenAI's own models.

Does BenAI use water?

BenAI's own models haven't used a single drop of water, not during training and not in a chat. They were trained in about a minute on an ordinary computer, and they run on your device, not in a water-cooled data center.

What does BenAI do if someone is struggling?

It answers with care before anything else. If a message suggests someone might hurt themselves, BenAI responds with support and points them to people who can help right away, like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in the US, a local crisis line, or emergency services.

Can BenAI give medical advice?

No. BenAI never diagnoses. For health, money or legal questions, it suggests double-checking with a reliable source or a qualified person.

Will BenAI do things without asking?

Only when it's sure what you meant. If BenAI isn't confident it understood you, it won't take any action and gives you a safe answer instead. Disruptive actions, like logging you out, always ask first.

Can BenAI make mistakes?

Yes, but it never makes things up on purpose. It calculates math problems instead of guessing, answers from its study notes or Wikipedia, and tells you when it isn't sure. Still, double-check anything important.

BenHealth

Everyday health tracking and guided workouts, backed by research.

What is BenHealth?

An advanced health platform built into BenOS Genesis and backed by scientific research. It keeps track of your water, steps and sleep every day, and guides you through workouts.

What does BenHealth track?

Your water (with a daily goal of 8 cups), your steps (10,000) and your sleep, each shown as a ring that fills up as you go. Log them in the app or from the Log menu in the menu bar. BenHealth starts fresh every day.

How do guided workouts work?

Pick Push Ups, Sit Ups or Squats and press Start Workout. BenHealth opens a guided workout with your camera view, so you can watch your form. The daily goals are 30 push-ups, 40 sit-ups and 50 squats.

Does BenHealth record my camera?

No. Your camera only shows on your own screen while a workout is open. BenHealth never uses your microphone, and the camera turns off as soon as you leave the workout.

Where is my health data stored?

In BenOS, on your device, just like the rest of your files. It isn't sent to us.

Is BenHealth medical advice?

No. BenHealth is backed by research and built to help you form healthy habits, but it isn't a doctor. For medical questions, talk to a health professional.

BenBrowser

Browsing inside BenOS, and why we search with Wikipedia.

How does BenBrowser work?

It's a tabbed browser built into BenOS. Type a web address to go straight there, or type anything else to search. Every tab runs in its own sandbox, and the start page has a search box and quick links.

What search engine does BenBrowser use?

Wikipedia. Whatever you search from the address bar or the start page is looked up on Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia run by the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation, and opens right inside BenBrowser.

Why Wikipedia?

Making Wikipedia BenBrowser's search engine is our way of supporting a nonprofit that keeps knowledge free for everyone. It's ad-free too, so your searches aren't surrounded by ads.

What are benos:// pages?

Built-in pages with help, tips and docs: benos://help, benos://tips and benos://docs. Type one into the address bar, or open them from BenBrowser's bookmarks.

Why won't some websites open in BenBrowser?

Some websites don't allow themselves to be shown inside another app, so they won't load in a BenBrowser tab. That's a choice the website makes, not a problem with BenOS.

Demo Mode

Showing off BenOS Genesis on a display device.

What is Demo Mode?

A way to set BenOS Genesis up on a display device and let anyone try it. BenOS Connect is built in, so visitors can only reach what you want to show, never your own files.

How do I turn Demo Mode on?

Open Settings, go to Users, and switch on Demo Mode. It starts right away.

How do I turn Demo Mode off?

Switch the same toggle off and enter your admin password. Nobody else can turn it off.

What can visitors do during a demo?

They can use BenBrowser, BenMusic, BenPen and Settings. They can't open Files or Terminal, clear notifications, shut down, log out of the demo user, delete important things, or change the demo user's name, password or hint.

Building apps

BenStudio, the App Store and the source code.

Can I make my own apps?

Yes. BenStudio lets you write HTML, CSS and JavaScript with a live preview, and you can install what you make right in BenOS Genesis. If you can write HTML, you can build an app.

Why should I save my SDC?

With your SDC saved, you never have to set everything up again. To avoid typing it over and over, lock BenOS with the lock icon in the upper-right corner.

An older version didn't save my data. Why?
