How it works.

One file

The whole OS lives in a single HTML and JavaScript file, which keeps it as light as possible.

A real file system

Files are stored with IndexedDB, handled by async JavaScript and Promises.

Sandboxed apps

Every app opens in its own sandboxed iframe, kept apart from the rest of the system.

Crash protection

A custom crash bridge watches for failures, so if one app goes down, the rest of BenOS keeps running.

Demo Mode, for showing it off.

Set BenOS Genesis up on a display device and let anyone try it. BenOS Connect is built in, so visitors can only reach what you want to show, never your own files.

  1. Open Settings → Users.
  2. Turn on Demo Mode. It starts right away.
  3. To turn it off, flip the toggle and enter your admin password. Nobody else can switch it off.

Visitors can use

  • BenBrowser
  • BenMusic
  • BenPen
  • Settings

Locked during a demo

  • Files and Terminal
  • Clearing notifications
  • Shutting down or logging out of the demo user
  • Deleting important things
  • Changing the demo user's name, password or hint

Two ways to run it.

On the web

  1. Go to mybenos.benjaminoriginals.com.
  2. Set up your account in Settings.
  3. That's it. Your data is saved and stays put when updates roll out.

The web version is exactly the same as the download. If you plan to clear your browser's cache or storage, back up important files first.

On your computer

  1. On GitHub, click the green Code button, then Download ZIP.
  2. Extract the ZIP and double-click the HTML file inside.
  3. Open Settings → Account and add your name. A password and hint are optional.

To keep your files saved permanently, open the file through a local server, like VS Code Live Server or Python's http.server, instead of double-clicking it.

Questions, answered.

What happened to BenOS HTML?

It's now called BenOS Genesis. BenOS HTML was the name for version 1.0 only. From version 2.0, BenOS is BenOS Genesis, at the same web address and on the same GitHub page.

Is BenOS Genesis free?

Yes. It's free to use on the web, and free to download from GitHub.

Does it replace or change my computer's operating system?

No. BenOS Genesis runs inside your browser. It doesn't interact with or modify macOS, Windows, Linux or anything else on your device.

Where are my files stored?

In your browser, using IndexedDB and localStorage. Clearing your browser data or cache can permanently delete your BenOS files and settings, so back up anything important.

Is the web version different from the download?

No, they're the same. Updates to the web version keep all of your data.

Can I make my own apps?

Yes. Build them in BenStudio with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, then submit them to the App Store.

Who made BenOS Genesis?

BenOS Genesis is made by Benjamin Originals. The original build of BenOS HTML, Sierra, was made by @DedeProGames-official.

BenOS HTML is now BenOS Genesis.

BenOS HTML was the name for version 1.0. Version 2.0 starts a new era, so it gets a new name.

Ready to try it?

BenOS Genesis is free and runs in any modern browser.
